Fabric claw clip bows allow you to accessorize your hairstyle without any extra work. The clips hold your hair in place while the bow masks the clip and provides an instant stylish accent. Making fabric claw clip bows is a craft that utilizes the basting stitch. You can create personalized hair accessories to match multiple outfits and hair styles. Mix and match fabric styles, colors and patterns to make colorful bows full of texture.
Instructions
1. Cut two strips of fabric 5 inches wide by 20 inches long. Fold the fabric strips in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together. Press the fold flat with a warm iron and pin the edges opposite the fold together with straight pins.
2. Thread a sewing machine with thread that matches the color of the fabric. Set the sewing machine stitch length to the longest length possible and the machine speed to low. Sew a basting stitch 1/4 inch from the edge along the length of each pinned edge. Remove the pins as you come to them.
3. Pull on the loose threads of the seam to gather the fabric of both strips. Fashion each gathered fabric strip into a circle. Tie knots in the loose threads to secure the gathers and then trim their lengths.
4. Fold the two short edges on each fabric strip inward 1/4 of an inch. Pin the sides together to form a circle and sew a seam along the shorter edges to join together. You should have two separate gathered fabric circles.
5. Cut a strip of fabric 5 inches wide by 4 inches long. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the right sides together. Sew a 1/4 inch seam down the joined edges to create a tube. Turn the tube right side out and fold the shorter edges inward 1/4 of an inch. Sew across each shorter edge to close. Trim any loose threads.
6. Lay the flat fabric strip across the top of the claw clip so that it covers the handles. Use hot glue to attach the ends of the fabric strip to the sides of the clip. Place one of the gathered fabric circles over the top of the fabric covered handles. Hot glue the inner seam of the circle to the sides of the clip right above the prongs. If the circle is too big, create small folds in the circle and glue them down.
7. Place the second gathered fabric circle onto the clip over the first fabric circle. Position the gathers and folds so that they alternate with the folds in the first circle. Hot glue the second circle in place. Open and close the clip to ensure that it still works properly before placing it in your hair.
