Hairbows are a timeless accessory that go with almost any wardrobe choice. While store-bought bows can be cute, you can match any outfit perfectly by making your own bows with ribbon of your choice. Handmade hairbows are also a popular item at boutiques, flea markets and for selling out of the home. The hairbow-making business can be a lucrative money-making option for many with the talent and time to invest.
Instructions
1. Decide how wide you want your hairbow. Cut a length of ribbon twice this length plus 1 inch. For example, if you want to make a 3 inch bow, cut 7 inches of ribbon.
2. Thread your needle and make a knot in the end of the thread. Make a loop with the ribbon, overlapping the ends by 1/2 inch.
3. Pinch the loop of ribbon in the center so that the overlapping ends are on bottom. Insert the needle into the overlapping ends and pull it through the top of the pinched ribbon loop.
4. Fold the bow like an accordion, then wrap the thread around it several times and tie it off.
5. Glue or sew an embellishment of your choice to the center of the bow. Some ideas are beads, buttons or antique pins. You might also choose to wrap a smaller piece of ribbon around the center.
6. Use a hot glue gun to glue the bow to a barrette. Alternatively you can sew through the back of the bow and wrap the thread multiple times around the barrette.
