Make Polyester Korker Bows

There's nothing cuter than a curly ribbon hair bow on a little princess. Learn to make korker bows, also called corkscrew bows, to coordinate with any little girl's wardrobe. Polyester ribbon is a must for these whimsical, curly designs; look for ribbons in a variety of patterns and colors in your local craft or fabric store. Metal barrette forms are also available in craft stores, or you can use plastic barrettes or headbands as support for the korker bows.

Instructions

Making Korker Ribbons

1. Cut 18 30-inch-long strands of 3/8-inch-wide polyester grosgrain ribbon. Alter the ribbon width if you prefer thin korker bows. Ribbons with widths that exceed 3/8 inch can make the finished hair bows too bulky. Eighteen ribbons will make a full hair bow; alter the number of ribbons to change the fullness of the finished bow.

2. Coat a ribbon strand with spray-on fabric stiffener. Attach the end of the ribbon strand to the end of a 12-inch-long by 1/2-inch-diameter dowel. Use a clothes pin to attach the ribbon to the dowel.

3. Wind the ribbon around the length of the dowel in a spiral. Do not overlap the edges. Use another clothes pin to attach the end of the ribbon to the end of the dowel. Line two baking sheets with tin foil. Place the dowel onto the baking sheet.

4. Spray fabric stiffener and spiral wrap each remaining ribbon strand. Fill the baking sheets with the dowels, but make sure that the ribbons are not touching.

5. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees. Place the baking sheets in the oven on the center rack and bake for 15 minutes. This oven will heat-set the korker curls. Remove one sheet from the oven and unwrap one of the ribbons from a dowel. If the curl is loose, re-wrap the dowel and continue baking all of the ribbons for 10 additional minutes.

6. Remove the baking sheets and let the ribbons cool for up to two hours. Remove the clothes pins and slide the dowel from inside each korker curl.

7. Spray each end of each korker bow with fray check. Cut a 16-inch-long strand of 1/4-inch-wide ribbon that coordinates with the korker bow ribbon. Place the ribbon strip face down on a flat work surface.

8. Group the korker ribbons together. Position the center of the korker ribbon group onto the center of the 1/4-inch-wide strand. The korker ribbons should be perpendicular to the 1/4-inch-wide ribbon.

9. Tie the 1/4-inch-wide ribbon around the korker ribbon group. Fluff the korker ribbons to camouflage the 1/4-inch-wide ribbon.

10. Glue the korker ribbon bundle onto the top of a barrette form with hot glue.
