Obtain A Baby To Prevent Tugging Hair

Teaching boundaries is important, even at an early age.

A baby may pull his caregiver's hair for a number of reasons; from curiosity to frustration. While babies have a hard time understanding how their actions affect others, parents and caregivers can use gentle redirection and positive discipline to teach an infant that hair pulling is an unacceptable behavior. Teaching babies this boundary will help them, at an early age, learn a better understanding of what hurts other people and be gentle and cope with frustration.

Instructions

1. Say "ouch" firmly, whenever your baby pulls your hair. Use the opportunity to explain to him or her that hair pulling hurts and that it's not fun to hurt people.

2. Tie your hair back out of your baby's reach, if you have long hair. This will prevent the act from happening and make it easier to teach the baby that the action is not acceptable and that hair is not a play toy.

3. Ignore the baby if he or she is pulling your hair in an attempt to get a reaction from you. Redirect the baby to other activities, such as playing or looking at books.

4. Talk often about what hurts others and why you shouldn't hurt people. Explain situations that would hurt and teach the baby other things that he or she can do when he or she feels frustrated or bored.

5. Avoid trying to teach the baby a lesson by pulling the baby's hair. This only shows children that it is okay to hurt other people out of frustration. Instead, remain calm while dealing with hair pulling.

6. Show your baby give gentle touches instead of being rough. Take the baby's hand and help him or her to stroke your hair gently and praise the baby for the gentle behavior.

7. Wait it out, even if it seems like it will go on forever. It is most likely a stage and he or she will outgrow it with time.
