Make Velcro Hair Bows
Many modern hair accessories are too heavy or cling too tightly to be comfortable in fine baby hair. Clips made with hook and loop fasteners are lightweight and don't pull on children's hair. They also stick easily to fine hair, cutting down the chances children will yank them out. While these types of hair ribbons and clips are rare in the commercial world, they are fairly easy to make at home. Not only are they more comfortable for your children, they can cost less too.
Instructions
1. Choose a type of ribbon. Something stiff, like organdy or grosgrain, works best. If possible, give your child or children a say in the color or pattern of the selected ribbon. Buy about a yard, so you can make extras.
2. Pick buttons, if desired, to match the ribbon. Plastic novelty buttons can be a good choice, since they are lightweight and come in the shapes of animals, flowers, hearts and stars. The buttons should be about the size of a penny.
3. Cut a strip of ribbon about 6 inches long. Tie it into a bow, pulling tightly so the knot stays put. Stitch one button into place in the center of the bow, pushing the needle through the bow's knot to secure it further. Tie the stitching off at the back of the bow and snip the threads.
4. Pull apart the sides of a hook and loop dot or strip. Place one or two drops of hot glue onto the back of one side of the fastener and press it to the back of the bow. If you have a very young child with soft, fine hair the dots will work fine. If your child is a little older, with slightly coarser hair, you may want to use a strip for extra security.
5. Allow the glue to dry for about an hour before use. Secure in a child's hair by pressing the hook or loop tape on the back of the bow into the child's hair and pressing the other half of the strip or dot into the underside of the hair bundle, making sure that at least part of the sides are touching each other.
