Finding cute, creative and affordable hair clips for your dog's top knot can be a challenge. The right dog hair clips stay in place, fit well, look cute and are easy to replace if lost. Woven ribbon animal hair clips are sturdy, stay securely in place and are affordable to make. Adjust the size as appropriate for your dog, making a small woven ribbon hair clip for a toy breed or a larger one for a standard poodle or Afghan hound.
Choose a Clip
Choose the right clip for your animal hair clips. You can create woven ribbon hair clips using snap clips -or double-bar barrettes. Snap clips come in a variety of sizes, from those aimed at babies to clips sized for thick hair. Select the right clip for your pet's hair clips based on size and coat. Thicker or curly coats may even require small or large double-bar style barrettes for a secure fit. Barrettes are quite inexpensive, so you may want to purchase and experiment with several for a good fit.
Ribbons
Use inexpensive 1/8-inch ribbon for woven ribbon animal hair clips. Choose grosgrain or satin ribbons; grosgrain will grip your pet's hair more effectively. Work with just one color or stack two colors for a different look. Cut two 1-yard lengths of ribbon for a small woven ribbon hair clip or a longer length for a larger ribbon barrette and stack one on top of the other. Decide if you want long ribbon tails on your woven ribbon animal hair clips or if you plan to simply finish the ends and avoid ribbon ends or tails altogether.
Weaving Ribbon
Find the center point of your ribbon and place the ribbon at the back, or hinged, part of your hair clip. Bring one end up and over one bar of the double-bar barrette or snap clip. Thread the ribbon down and under the other side of the animal hair clip. Alternate sides in this braiding pattern until you reach the end of the barrette. Knot the ends of the ribbon or tie into a bow. Secure the knot or bow with a small drop of clear fabric glue. Add beads, bells or other accents to the ends of the ribbon. As an alternative, create a cleaner look by threading the ribbon onto a tapestry needle and tucking the ends into the underside of the ribbon hair clip.
