Make custom ribbon hair barrettes for holidays throughout the year.
You can make hair barrettes at home for a customized hair accessory to go with any outfit and for any age. You can make colorful hair bows with just a few simple steps and children can even work alongside caregivers for an afternoon craft activity. Use large ribbons for wide and loopy hair barrettes and tiny ribbons for intricately designed accessories.
Instructions
Curly Ribbon Hair Barrettes
1. Wrap a 10-inch long and half-inch wide ribbon around a long half-inch wooden dowel and secure both ends to the dowel with a binder clip or paper clip. Repeat this step 10 more times for a smaller barrette and 14 more times for a larger barrette. For a more colorful barrette, use two or three different colored ribbons.
2. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, place the ribbon-covered dowels on a baking sheet and put the sheet in the oven for approximately 25 minutes.
3. Allow the ribbons to cool at room temperature for one to two hours.
4. Remove the ribbons from the dowels and gather them together in one hand. Place your fingers at the center of the ribbons and wrap a small piece of ribbon around the center and tie it tightly. Fan out the ribbons to form a curly circle of ribbons.
5. Apply glue with a hot glue gun to the center of the bow and press it firmly onto the top center of a metal barrette. Hold the ribbons in place for 30 seconds and then allow it to dry for 24 hours before using the barrette.
Looping Ribbon Bows
6. Take out the middle spring from a metal barrette.
7. Pull a thread through the edge of half-inch wide ribbons with a sewing needle. The needle should be double-threaded with a knot tied at the end.
8. Put the threaded ribbon onto the barrette and sew a stitch through the hole at the end of the metal clip to attach the ribbon. Pull the ribbon tightly across the barrette and sew a stitch through the hole at the other end of the clip.
9. Wrap the thread around one end of the ribbon and barrette five or six times. Make a loop with the doubled-ribbon and wrap the thread around the bottom of the loop and the barrette five or six times in a circular motion. Fan out the ribbon slightly and make another bow with the next section of doubled ribbon. Repeat this step, fanning out the ribbon and moving along the barrette as you continue.
10. Insert the sewing needle through some of the thread underneath the barrette, cut the thread and tie it in a knot. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to cover the back of the barrette and use the glue gun to attach it to the underside. Put the metal spring back in the clip.
