Make a simple tutu and hair bow accessory.
Making hair bows and tutus is a fun way to spend time with a younger female relative. These handmade accessories will also be ideal gifts for a young girl, and you can tailor them to the individual's color preferences and tastes. You can make hair bows out of almost any ribbon or strip of fabric, and tutus are simple to make with the right materials and tools. You won't even have to touch a needle and thread to make your tutu.

Make A Tutu
1. Buy the right amount of tulle and ribbon from a fabric or craft store in the colors that you want. If you are making this tutu for a small child, you will need four yards of tulle and 60 inches of ribbon to tie around her waist. Instead of buying the tulle by the yard, you can also buy it in 6-inch-by-25-yard rolls, which will save you time when cutting the tulle.
2. Cut your tulle into strips of the length that you need. For a short tutu for a little girl, the tutu should extend down only about one foot. Remember that the tulle will stick out a little as well and won't drape down like other fabrics. Multiply the desired length of the tutu by two, and that is the length you need your tulle strips to be. Cut your rolls of tulle at these lengths. If you bought yards, roll the tulle up and cut 3-inch sections to make your strips. Cut a total of 40 to 60 strips for a small child's tutu.
3. Measure one end of the ribbon to 20 inches and begin tying the tulle strips to the ribbon. Make a double knot or slip knot at the middle of the strip of tulle. Add the strips along the ribbon and slide each one tightly against the one before it. Make a few stitches in the ones on the end to secure them to the ribbon if you want. Leave the length of ribbon on the ends to make a bow when you put the tutu on the child.

4. Cut a piece of ribbon at the appropriate length. If you want the bow to be 6 inches long, cut a strip of ribbon that is 12 inches long. Cut another piece of the same ribbon that is 8 inches and another that is 2 inches.
5. Thread a sewing needle and tie a knot at the other end of the thread. Fold the 12-inch length of ribbon in half to find the exact middle. Fold the two ends in so that they meet at the center. Run a few long, straight stitches across the middle where the two ends meet and hold the ribbon loosely as you pull the thread. The middle will bunch up and your ribbon will begin to take the bow shape. Run a few more stitches in the center to hold the bunched shape and cut the thread.
6. Sew the 8-inch length of ribbon to the bottom of the bow. Make a knot in the end of the thread like you did in Step 2, and make sure the stitches are secure by doing at least six or seven. This is the piece of the bow that will hang down (this is optional).
7. Fold the 2-inch length of ribbon in half and wrap it around the middle to cover up the stitches you made. Sew the ends together in the back with at least 10 straight stitches and carefully snip off any excess. Attach the back of the hair bow to a plain hair clip with a hot-glue gun and let it cool completely before the child wears it.
