Select ribbons in luxurious fabrics and darker tones.
Accessories liven up old outfits. This is true for most fashions, and those falling under the goth subculture are no different. The goth subculture employs dark imagery, macabre symbols and decadent fibers. The juxtaposition of these elements with a hair bow allow you to play with your appearance. Gothic hair bows are constructed in the same manner as most other hair bow -- the difference is largely in the details, such as the fabric and color of the ribbon and the focal beads or embellishments chosen.
Instructions
1. Cut one end of a piece of ribbon. Leave the other end attached to the bolt or spool. Make a sharply angled cut -- 45 degrees or more -- to neaten the end and minimize fraying.
2. Make a loop in the ribbon.The loop should be about equal in length to the barrette clip you've chosen. Choose darker colors or jewel tones to keep the gothic aesthetic. Use luxurious fabrics, like satin or velveteen to capture the decadent spirit of the subculture. Leave a 1 to 2 inch tail of ribbon -- the cut end -- hanging from the loop.
3. Hold the loop in place. Gather the ribbon to create another loop in the ribbon. Angle it crosswise over the first loop.
4. Gather ribbon into loops to fill out the bow. Make as many loops as you desire. Hold all the loops in the center of the bow.
5. Twist a length of floral wire around the center of the loops, securing them into a bow shape. Wrap the floral wire tightly around the center of the bow three to four times to ensure a secure hold.
6. Cut the ribbon, separating it from the bolt or spool. Make a sharply angled cut across the width of the ribbon to minimize fraying.
7. Coat the cut ends of the ribbon with clear nail polish to prevent fraying. Apply only a dab to the ends to minimize the appearance of the nail polish.
8. Remove the bar tension spring from the back of the barrette.
9. Place a line of hot glue on the barrette, on the flat edge of the piece. Place the glue on the bar that sits on the opposite side of the barrette from the tension bar mechanism.
10. Press the bow onto the barrette. Hold in place and let the glue dry thoroughly.
11. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to wrap around the center of the bow and the barrette.
12. Coat the center of the bow, on top of the floral wire, with hot glue.
13. Press the center of the cut length of ribbon over the center of the bow. Place two more drops of hot glue on the back of the barrette. Press the ends of the cut piece of ribbon over the drops of hot glue. This secures the length of ribbon to the bow and barrette, hiding the floral wire. Let the glue dry.
14. Spread another dollop of hot glue on the center of the bow, on top of the piece of ribbon you put in place.
15. Affix a bead, pendant or focal piece on top of the ribbon in the center of the bow. Choose a skull and crossbones, cogs and gears or any other piece you feel captures the spirit of the goth subculture. Let the glue dry.
16. Replace the tensioner bar on the back of the barrette and make any necessary adjustments to the ribbon bow.
