Make cloth pinwheels to use as wall hangings, pins or hair accessories.
A pinwheel is a children's toy that consists of a round wheel of loops on a stick. The paper or plastic wheel spins on the stick when exposed to moving air. Pinwheels are easy to make and can be made at home. Use pieces of cloth to make a pinwheel instead of paper or plastic. Mix and match printed- and solid-colored fabric to create bright, whimsical pinwheels. Once they are complete, turn your cloth pinwheels into wall hangings, hair accessories, brooches or bows for presents.
Instructions
1. Lay two pieces of fabric that are different colors face-up on a flat work surface. Choose fabrics with patterns and colors that coordinate. Lay a piece of fusing web on the work surface alongside the fabric.
2. Decide how big you want your pinwheel. Measure one square equal to the desired size on the first piece of fabric using a fabric measuring tape. Mark the square onto the fabric with a fabric pencil. Create two more squares of the same size, one on the second piece of fabric and one on the fusing web. Cut out the three squares with a pair of scissors.
3. Lay the first fabric square, right side down, on an ironing board. Place the fusing web square on top of the first fabric square, making sure the edges are even. Lay the second fabric square, right side up, on top of the fusing. Ensure that the edges of all three squares are even.
4. Press the layered squares with a warm iron to activate the fusing web and join the layers together. Check to ensure that all edges are fused together. Iron over the square again if you are able to pull apart the edges.
5. Cut a slit in the fabric square beginning at one of the corners and working your way toward the center. Cut only two-thirds of the way to the center point of the square. Repeat this in each of the three remaining corners.
6. Thread a sewing needle with thread that matches the color of the fabric. Tie a knot in the end of the thread.
7. Fold the tip of the triangle at the top left corner of the fabric square to the center point of the square. Work in a clockwise direction and fold every other point to the center in the same manner.
8. Push the needle through the center back of the pinwheel and up through all four folded points. Pull the needle and thread through the fabric until the knot catches at the back. Make a few stitches in the center of the wheel to secure the points in place. End with the needle and thread protruding through the front of the pinwheel.
9. Slip the needle through one hole of a button. Push the button down the needle and thread until it rests on the surface of the center of the pinwheel. Sew the button in place. Tie a knot in the thread behind the button. Clip the loose thread.
