Create A Christmas Bow Using 2 25" Velvet Ribbon

Make the loops of the bow as large or small as you like.

Whether for packages or decorations, bows put a finishing touch on a Christmas project. Pre-made bows--especially those made from wide velvet ribbon--can be expensive, and it might be tempting to forgo them. This doesn't need to be the case. Bows are not difficult to make and can be formed quickly from any type of ribbon, even velvet ribbon. Once you have the basic technique down, you can make bows for all your gift-giving and decorating needs.

Instructions

1. Leave the velvet ribbon on the spool. Although you can make bows of similar size, you don't know how much ribbon you will need to make each bow. By leaving the ribbon on the spool, you can adjust the size of the bow.

2. Grasp the ribbon about 3 inches from the end. Pinch it in the middle of the ribbon. With the other hand, take the end still attached to the spool and form a loop of any size you want for the project, pinching the end and adding it to the first pinch.

3. Repeat Step 3, but form the new loop in a different direction. Continue making the loops for the Christmas bow. These can all be the same size, or they can gradually get smaller. The more loops a bow has, the larger and fuller it will be; however, it will be difficult to hold too many pinches between your fingers, especially with the wide velvet ribbon. When the bow is the size you want, cut off the end at a diagonal.

4. Secure the pinched center of the ribbon by wrapping floral wire or pipe cleaner around it. Depending on the size of the bow, you might have to wrap it several times. Twist the end of the wire or pipe cleaner and cut off the excess.

5. Grasp the wire or pipe cleaner and gently shake the bow. Fluff and adjust the loops to give the bow a fuller look.
