Victorian bows should be elegant and sumptuous.
Both Victorian decor and costuming employed decadent fabrics, such as velvet, brocade and satin. All three of these fabrics can be fashioned into a dress, bonnet or fashionable bows. Bows adorned fashion in abundance, and a Victorian bow can still be used on a hat, a Christmas tree or as a decoration at an event. Change the size of the bow to create a suitable ornament for each of these projects.
Instructions
1. Cut a piece of ribbon about 2-feet long. The longer the ribbon, the larger the loops on the bow. Lay the ribbon with the right side facing down.
2. Hold the center of the ribbon in place with one hand. Take the right side of the ribbon and create a loop, keeping the ribbon fabric face down and bringing the end toward the center of the ribbon. The loop should curve up and over the ribbon base, leaving a tail that hangs down below the ribbon. Create a loop with the left side of the ribbon, symmetrical to the right side.
3. Hold down the center of the ribbon and the loop tails, which should be layered over the center of the ribbon. Pin in place using a fabric pin.
4. Thread a needle with 2 feet of matching thread. Feed one end of the thread through the eye of the needle until half the thread has been fed through. Tie the two ends together. Tack together the three layers of ribbon to keep the two loops in place. Do not cut the thread at this point.
5. Pull down the top, center of the ribbon so that it scrunches into the center. Pull up the bottom, center of the ribbon to meet the middle. Use the connected thread and needle to tack the center together and create a scrunched center to the bow. Tie off the thread and cut off the excess. Turn the bow over to face right side up.
