Use scissors to transform an old dress into a Tinkerbell costume.
Need a great Halloween costume for your fairy-loving child? This Tinkerbell costume requires no sewing and can be put together quickly enough even for a last minute party or parade. Most children won't mind if their Tinkerbell dress is not the exact green as the original, so use any old dress or t-shirt you have in the house that you don't mind cutting up a bit. Add a few accessories and some glitter and your little Tinkerbell will be ready to spread some fairy magic.
Instructions
The Dress
1. Cut the bottom hem of the dress or adult size shirt into an uneven zig-zag pattern.
2. Cut the sleeves into an uneven zig-zag pattern.
3. Cut a piece of the sheer, sparkly fabric into a rectangle long enough to wrap around your child and almost reach the hem of the dress.
4. Lay the ribbon right side down across a flat surface.
5. Squirt hot glue across the wrong side of the ribbon.
6. Press the top edge of the right side of the sparkly fabric rectangle onto the glue on the ribbon. Work quickly because the glue will dry very quickly.
7. Cut the bottom of the sparkly fabric into an uneven zig-zag pattern.
The Wings
8. Twist the two hooks on the hangers together to connect the two hangers. They should look like a wire bow at this point.
9. Pull on the flat edges of the hanger until you have formed a wing shape on either side. Try to make the sides as similar in shape as possible.
10. Lay a sparkly fabric right side down on a flat work surface.
11. Lay your metal wire "wings" on top of the fabric, centering them on the fabric.
12. Trim the fabric so there is about one inch on all sides of the wire metal wings.
13. Apply glue onto the fabric just inside the wire wing outline. Work in sections because the glue will dry very quickly. Alternate between doing a top, bottom, left and right section to ensure that you don't pull the fabric too tighltly on one side and cause a gap on the other side.
14. Pull the outside one-inch edge of the fabric over the wire and press onto the glue. Glue all of the fabric to the wings this way, pulling taut as you go. Cover the center hooks as well. Trim the fabric after the glue is dry.
15. Wrap a center of a long piece of ribbon around the covered twisted hooks, leaving the two long ends free and pointing toward the top of the wings. Tie a knot if desired.
Dressing Your Child
16. Put the dress on your child.
17.Wrap the ribbon with the sparkly fabric attached around your child's waist, tying a bow in the back. Make sure the right side of the ribbon is showing so you cannot see where you glued the fabric. For extra sparkle, add a sparkly tutu under the dress if you have one in the house.
18. Center the wings on your child's back. You may want to ask someone to hold the wings while you tie the ribbon.
19. Pull the one ribbon over each shoulder from behind so the wings are at the desired height.
20. Cross the ribbons over your child's chest and wrap them around her waist.
21. Pull the ends of the ribbon around to your child's back, cross the ends again and tie them to either the center hooks or the ribbon holding the wings up. Alternately, you can skip crossing the ribbon over your child's chest and just form the loops to go around her arms. This will be easier for the child to remove herself, but will also not stay on as securely.
22. Style your child's hair into a bun high on her head, add a magic wand and some glitter makeup if desired, and your child has transformed into Tinkerbell!
