Make raggie hair bows from nearly any fabric type or color.
Raggie bows are a type of decorative fabric craft adored by toddlers and young girls. Although you can purchase designer hair accessories, they can become costly. Why not customize your own raggie bows, which are simple to make and require minimal supplies. You can use scrap fabric of any color or design to create the bow, and then add your finished piece as a decorative feature to whatever type of accessory you would like.
Instructions
1. Measure 10 5-inch-by-5-inch squares on a sheet of decorative fabric. Cut the fabric squares out with a pair of decorative edge scissors. Spray the decorative cut edges of the fabric squares with a non-fraying fabric spray.
2. Stack the 10 fabric squares on top of one another. Turn each square to the right so that the overlapping square is at a diagonal to the square beneath it. Continue with all 10 of the squares.
3. Thread an embroidery needle with a double strand of thread. Create a knot at the end of the thread. The thread color should match the fabric color to hide the stitching.
4. Pull the threaded embroidery needle through the center of the fabric squares. Begin from the bottom to hide the knot. Hold the fabric firmly while pushing the needle through all 10 squares so that the squares stay evenly stacked.
5. Push the threaded embroidery needle back down to the bottom of the fabric stack. Insert the needle close to the original center hole. Make a final stitch from the bottom of the fabric stack back to the top.
6. Pinch the center of the square that sits on the top of the fabric stack. Pull the center down slightly to form a "V" fold. Stitch the sides of the V fold with the embroidery needle and thread. Create a knot when finished and cut off the excess thread.
7. Repeat the V-fold stitching with every fabric square. With each successive square, add fewer stitches along the folds. When you add fewer stitches as you work your way down the stack, the raggier the bottom layers will appear.
8. Attach an elastic ponytail holder to the bottom center of the raggy bow. Stitch the ponytail holder securely to the bow so that it can be worn in the hair or around the wrist. As an alternative, glue a barrette or headband to the bottom fabric square.
