Plain wooden spoons work best for spoon dolls.
A spoon doll is a piece of folk art you can easily make at home. Include your friends or kids, and you can turn a dull afternoon into a spoon doll-making party. The dolls can be as simple or elaborate as you wish, but the basics include a wooden spoon with a face etched or drawn on it and clothing. From this point, you can expand the design with your own creative input to include props and different types of hair, hats and clothing.
Instructions
1. Paint the doll's face on the back of the spoon. A different face can be painted on the opposite side if you wish. Set aside to let the paint dry.
2. Cut a "T" shape for the dress using two pieces of fabric. Face the two rough sides together, and sew the edges beginning with the shoulders. Leave an opening for the neck. Stitch the underside of the arm to the edge of the dress on each side. Hem the bottom leaving a neatly finished edge. Turn it right-side out.
3. Stitch the arms with the rough sides facing in. Then turn them out, and stuff them lightly with cotton stuffing. Slip-stitch the arms inside of each sleeve in a symmetrical fashion. Slip the dress onto the spoon, and tie it in place at the neck and the waist with ribbon. You can also use a dab of glue from your glue gun to keep it in place.
4. Finish the doll with trim by either hand-stitching or using your glue gun. Paint or draw hair, or add hair with strands of yarn. A hat can also be added to the head of the doll. Cut any loose ends of thread, and let any glue dry.
