With a few household tools, you can keep your daughter's beautiful bows from fraying and losing their shape. Fray Check, a liquid seam sealant, dries clear and remains slightly pliable. Perfect for grosgrain and organza ribbon, Fray Check is not suggested for use with chiffon (organza) ribbon, as liquid dries to a film that may alter the look of your bow. A butane lighter or wood-burning tool melts the edges of all ribbon types to keep them from fraying. Fabric-stiffening spray, also known as spray starch, will keep your bows crisp.
Instructions
Sealing Ribbon Edges with Fray Check
1. Cut ribbon ends at desired angle and length.
2. Apply a thin line of Fray Check along the cut edge of ribbon.
3. Allow to dry. Repeat as necessary.
Sealing Ribbon Edges with a Butane Lighter
4. Cut ribbon ends at desired angle and length.
5. Holding ribbon firmly, quickly move lighter along cut edge. Do not touch flame to the ribbon, but allow the heat to seal the ribbon edge. Practice this technique on spare ribbon as necessary to produce even results without scorching the ribbon.
6. Repeat as necessary until all cut edges are sealed.
Sealing Ribbon Edges with a Wood-Burning Tool
7. Place ribbon on a cookie sheet.
8. Place ruler at desired ribbon length and press firmly.
9. Quickly run the wood-burning tool's tip against the ruler edge. This will cut and seal the ribbon edge.
10. Repeat as necessary until ribbon is cut completely. Thicker ribbons may take several passes.
Using Stiffening Spray to Keep Bow Shape
11. Lay bow flat, loops facing up, in a well-ventilated area.
12. Crumple tissue paper into balls. Place tissue inside each ribbon loop and shape as desired.
13. Hold stiffening spray several inches above bow and spray, moving constantly. Cover bow with an even, light mist.
14. Allow to dry and repeat as necessary. Remove tissue paper once dry.
