Hair bows are a great addition to the standard cheerleader uniform.
Double cheer bows allow cheer squads to represent the school's main colors during sporting events. Using two pieces of ribbon, rather than one, also adds volume and grabs the attention of the crowd. Seeing the school spirit of the cheerleaders makes fans also have more excitement for the team. While you can purchase this type of hair accessory at the store, it is easily made at home and can even be a fun bonding event for the squad.
Instructions
1. Cut two 15-inch pieces of grosgrain ribbon that represents your school's colors. Select the width depending on how thick or thin you want the bow to be, with thicker ribbon being larger and more attention grabbing.
2. Seal the four ends of the two ribbons with fray sealant, such as Fray Check or Fray Blocker. Run the sealant along the edge of the ribbon, covering the entire length of the cut. Once the sealant has dried, about 15 minutes to an hour, check for any missed areas. You want to routinely check for additional fraying after each use, applying more sealant as necessary.
3. Thread both pices of ribbon through the appropriately-sized hair clip. Small ribbons only require a bobby pin while thick ribbons require a snap clip. Sturdy barrettes, such as a French barrette, are a popular option due to the strong spring and clipping mechanism, which tightly holds the hair together.
4. Tie a standard bow in the ribbons, as you would do in your shoelace. Adjust the knot to make it lie flat against itself with few bumps and twists. This is called dressing the knot. Pull the ribbons apart from each other so both colors are showing. If you want two separate bows, tie each piece of ribbon individually so they sit next to each other.
