Items To Put on To Some Gala

Your clothing should be both formal and comfortable for a gala event.

Gala events are generally formal occasions where it is customary to dress in your best clothing. Your style can make a bold statement about your lifestyle or you can stick with something a little more elegant and reserved. Review the information about the event beforehand to determine if there is a specific theme you should observe.

Female Clothing

It's customary for women to wear elegant gowns to a gala event, but any clothes are acceptable as long as they have a formal appeal. Aim for long skirts and high heels. Warm weather makes it acceptable to wear spaghetti straps and low cut gowns. Stick with silk and cotton if you expect it will be hot. For cooler climates, cashmere and other heavy fabrics work well; stick to long sleeved outfits that work well with a fashionable overcoat. Thick stockings will help keep your legs warm as well.

Male Clothing

Men should wear a formal tux to a gala event, but it is possible to slide by with a formal suit and tie. Wear a bow tie around your neck and a tuxedo vest under your overcoat but above your button-up shirt. As with women, cotton and silk work well during warm events, while cashmere and wool are the best choice for cold weather events. Men have more coverage than women do in cold weather, so wear insulated underwear that covers your arms and legs if you fear it will be really cold outside.

Female Accessories

It's hard to go overboard with shiny jewelry when you have purely formal clothing on. Wear intricate earrings that hang low along with a matching necklace. Bracelets are optional, but they go a long way to dress up your arms in a short-sleeve outfit. Match your purse and your shoes to your outfit, making them seem like a natural extension of your dress. Flowers are acceptable in your hair, but be prepared to have them fall out as the night progresses.

Male Accessories

While men's accessories are generally more subtle than a woman's, they work to bring your entire outfit together. Stylish cufflinks add an extra bit of color and shine to your outfit. Match your shoes to the color of your tux or just leave them black. Ask your date to button a decorative boutonniere to your lapel before you arrive; the flowers help add a splash of color to the outfit that isn't as subtle as the cufflinks, but still looks attractive.
