Design Korker Hairbows

Make hair accessories from curly ribbons.

Korker hair bows are made from ribbons that are coiled around dowels and heated in the oven. After the ribbons cool and are removed from the dowels, they maintain their curly shape. Turn the curly ribbons into a variety of different hair bows for a child or make them for yourself to flaunt your youthful side. Make crazy-looking bows by gathering the curly ribbons together at the center. Or make loopy, round bows by joining the ribbon ends together to make loops and layering the loops on top of each other.

Instructions

Make the Korker Ribbons

1. Cut 16-inch-long pieces of ribbon. Use 1/4-inch-wide ribbon for thin bows and 1/2-inch-wide ribbon for wider hair bows. Cut at least 30 pieces of ribbon.

2. Wrap each piece of ribbon around the wooden dowels or skewers. Hold the ends of the ribbons to the dowels or skewers with heat-resistant clips or clothespins.

3. Place the ribbons on a baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes at 275 degrees F.

4. Cool the ribbons at room temperature.

5. Remove the clips and pull the ribbons off the dowels or skewers gently.

6. Gather the curly ribbons together and align the ends.

7. Wrap a piece of elastic around the center of the ribbons and tie the elastic in a knot to keep the ribbons together.

8. Flip the ribbons over and tie another knot on the other side. Tugging on the elastic as you tie it in a knot will cause the korker ribbons to fan out.

9. Cut off the extra elastic.

10. Spread some glue on your hair clip and press the center of the ribbon bunch against the hair clip. Let the glue dry before trying on the hair bow.

11. Pick up one of the korker ribbons and bring the short ends together. Sew the short ends together to make a curly loop. Repeat with each of the korker ribbons.

12. Pinch one of the loops together in the center and sew a stitch through the pinched section to make a bow shape. Do not cut the thread.

13. Pinch another loop together in the center and slide the needle through the center of the pinched section. Sew a stitch. Repeat with each of the curly ribbon loops, fanning out the edges as you work.

14. Spread some glue on the top of the hair clip and press the center of the ribbon bow firmly against the clip.

15. Apply some glue to the back of a large imitation gemstone, button or silk flower and press it into the center of the curly, loopy hair bow.
