Mix and match ribbon widths, textures and colors to create whimsical hair accessories.
Finding the right hair bow to match your child's Halloween costume can be time consuming and expensive. Cut down on time and cost by learning make your own bows out of simple craft materials. By picking out the materials yourself, you can create beautiful hair accessories that perfectly match holiday outfits. Your hair bow can be attached to headbands, hair clips, or elastic ponytail holders. Use buttons and figurines to add a unique centerpiece to each bow.
Instructions
1. Cut four pieces of ribbon, 6 inches in length with a sharp pair of scissors. Two of these pieces should be of orange 1-inch ribbon, and two pieces of black 1-inch ribbon. Lay all four pieces, right-side down, on a flat surface.
2. Apply a thin layer of clear fingernail polish on both ends of each ribbon. This ensures that the ends do not fray.
3. Place a drop of hot glue on one end of a ribbon piece. Fold the glued end over the other end to form a loop. The right side of the ribbon should be on the outside. Gently press and hold the ends together until the glue is dry. Repeat this step for each ribbon until you have four complete loops.
4. Place a drop of hot glue inside each of the ribbon loops at the center. Press the sides together to secure. Each loop should now have formed a bow.
5. Glue the first two bows together at the center with hot glue so they form a cross. Glue the third and forth bow together so they also form a cross. Glue the two crosses together at a 45 degree angle at the center to form a ribbon wheel. There should be eight loops of ribbon forming a circle with no ends overlapping.
6. Cut four pieces of ribbon, 4 inches in length. Two pieces should be orange 1-inch ribbon and two pieces of black 1-inch ribbon. Lay the pieces right-side down on a flat surface. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to form a second, smaller ribbon wheel.
7. Glue the smaller ribbon wheel on top of the larger ribbon wheel with hot glue. The colors should alternate, meaning the black loops of the smaller wheel should be in front of the orange loops of the larger wheel.
8. Cut a piece of orange ribbon the same length as the hair clip. Glue the ribbon face up on the top of the clip to cover the metal.
9. Cut nine pieces of 1/4-inch ribbon into 14-inch lengths to use as streamers. Place the hair clip ribbon-side up on a flat surface. Gather the streamers together and lay them across the top of the hair clip so they are centered. Place a large drop of hot glue over the streamers to secure them to the hair clip.
10. Glue the ribbon wheel on top of the hair clip. Make sure your ribbon wheel is centered and the streamers protrude past the edges. Place glue on the back of a button and glue to the center of the assembled hair bow.
