Create A Crab Bow

Hair bows are easy to personalize with themed imagery, like a crab.

Hair bows are a timeless accessory for young girls. One quality that has made them such an enduring embellishment is how open they are to personalization. You can make hair bows in any size, shape, color or corresponding to any theme. A crab is wonderful imagery for a hair bow because its shape and colors are so distinctive.

Instructions

1. Cut a 12-inch length of the wide grosgrain ribbon.

2. Roll the ribbon into a coil. Wind it tight enough so there are no sizable gaps, but with enough slack that it extends slightly at the sides in the middle of the coil. It should loosely resemble a crescent roll. This is the body of the crab.

3. Put a small drop of hot glue on the tail end of the ribbon. Press it to the coil and hold it for a moment as the glue sets.

4. Cut eight pieces of the narrow grosgrain ribbon. Cut each piece of ribbon 2 inches long.

5. Trim a V-shape into one end of each piece of ribbon to fork the end. These are the crab's legs.

6. Apply a drop of hot glue to the top of the hair clip. Place the glue drop slightly off-center.

7. Press the untrimmed edge of a small piece of ribbon into the glue. Repeat the process three more times in the same area. Arrange the pieces so they fan out from their common glued point on the barrette.

8. Repeat the process with four remaining pieces off-center on the other side of the hair clip. Leave a 1/2-inch space in the center of the barrette between each group of ribbon crab claws.

9. Apply a generous dollop of hot glue in the center of the hair clip. Press the coiled ribbon into the glue.

10. Apply two small drops of hot glue to the coiled ribbon slightly above its center. Place one googly eye in each drop.
