Create A Cheer Bow With No Glue Gun

Cheer bows often resemble the pom-poms used in cheerleading.

Cheer bows are bows made of various colors of ribbon. The colors typically signify team colors or squad colors. Cheer bows created without the use of hot glue are sewn together instead of glued together. Make cheer bows with ribbons of various lengths for added dimension and texture or create a uniform bow with ribbons of the same length. Shorten the length of the ribbons for smaller children or for pigtail cheer bows.

Instructions

1. Cut 10 ribbons to 6-inch lengths.

2. Fold each ribbon in half length-wise and make a diagonal cut from the edge to the fold to create an inverted "V" shape at the end of each ribbon. This cut is optional.

3. Thread a 3-inch long embroidery needle with embroidery floss. Knot the floss 3-inches from the end.

4. Fold the ribbon in half length-wise and then fold one end of the ribbon over, creating a "V" shape with the ribbon. Fold the ribbon so both sides of the "V" are the same length.

5. Push the needle through the ribbon at the middle of the bottom of the "V" shape. Push the ribbon to the end of the needle but don't push it down onto the thread. Fold the next ribbon and thread it onto your needle, turning it slightly so it's at a different angle than the first. Continue folding and stacking your ribbon pieces until all are on the needle. Spread the ribbons out while they're on the needle, making sure that they're fanned out to create a full cheer bow with each ribbon evenly spaced.

6. Push the ribbons down to the end of the thread. Pass the needle back through the ribbons, making sure you're going through beside the original hole, not through the original hole.

7. Set a hair elastic against the bottom of the bow next to your needle. Continue to pass your needle back and forth through the ribbons, catching the hair elastic beneath each pass so you're sewing the cheer bow to the hair elastic. Make at least three passes and end with the needle on the same end of the cheer bow as the hair elastic.

8. Pull the needle off of the thread and tie the two ends of floss together in at least two knots. Cut the excess floss away from the bow.
