Any type of urine from mammals, both humans and pets, contains uric acid crystals. Whether you are cleaning up after your child, an incontinent adult or your pet, the uric acid smell can stay on clothes even after laundering. You can use ingredients you may already have in your pantry to remove these odors from clothes, bedding and other washable fabrics cost-effectively and safely.
Instructions
1. Pre-treat the clothes by placing them on a flat surface and spraying them with an enzyme-based cleaner, saturating the area thoroughly to ensure complete coverage.
2. If you have a top-loading washing machine, start it as you would normally, using the cycle speed and water temperature recommended on the garment label. Add your regular laundry detergent as the washer fills with water, letting the washer fill completely before loading the stained clothes.
3. Add one cup of white vinegar to the load, letting the washer agitate enough to mix the vinegar throughout the clothes, then stop the machine. Allow to soak for one hour, then run the machine through the rest of the washing cycle.
4. If you have a front-loading washing machine, pre-soak the clothes in a utility sink or in a large bucket filled with water. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the water, then add the clothes. Let them soak for one hour, then pour off the water. Load the clothes into the washer, then add one cup of vinegar and your regular laundry detergent and set the machine for a regular cycle.
5. Hang the clothes outside on a clothesline if you can, or dry them in the dryer with scented dryer sheets of your choice.
