Remove Fresh paint From Bow Braches

Remove Paint From Bow Limbs

A bow limb is the foundation of a bow, which is used to project arrows in the sport of archery. These weapons come in several different configurations according to an archer's preference. Modern bow limbs are constructed of laminated wood, metals, fiberglass and carbon fiber components that are often painted for aesthetic purposes. Removing paint from a bow limb will require a solvent that can be safely applied to its surface.

Instructions

1. Clean the bow limb with a slightly damp cloth to remove any grease, dirt or residue. The surface will need to be smooth before any type of solvent is applied.

2. Ventilate the area, or work outside to maximize air circulation. Fumes from both household and commercial chemicals can be hazardous.

3. Pour a moderate amount of acetone onto a clean cloth and test it on a small area of the bow limb. Commonly found in nail polish removers, acetone is an effective method for removing paint in small quantities because it evaporates quickly and can be applied consistently until the task is complete.

4. Proceed to rub the painted areas on the bow limbs until the acetone begins to thin the paint. A scouring pad may be necessary for light scrubbing if the coat is especially thick or stubborn.

5. Use a mild paint thinner only on bare metal and wooden surfaces with no other finish beneath the paint. Paint thinner may be too harsh for bow limbs made of synthetic materials and can warp or crack them.

6. Apply an even layer of the paint thinner to the bow using a small brush, rag or aerosol spray can depending on the application type. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper removal of the paint, and rinse the excess with water and clean cloths.
