Lend rich color and a luxurious feel to craft projects by incorporating velvet ribbon as an eye-catching, dimensional touch. Use the plush ribbon as an accent or put it center stage to give inexpensive home decor items a deluxe look. Choose ribbon in a shade that complements your project from a fabric, craft or jewelry making store.
Ribbon Monograms
Let your children help create a velvet ribbon craft to display on a bedroom or playroom wall. Buy 6- to 8-inch-tall wood letters at a craft store or create your own chipboard letters by tracing letter stencils onto chipboard with a pencil and cutting the shapes out with sharp scissors or a craft knife.
Cut 5- to 7-inch-long pieces of velvet ribbon, depending on the width of your letters. Choose colors that coordinate with the room decor where you plan to hang the letters. Tie a ribbon around the letter and make a simple knot that rests on the front of the letter. Let the ends of the ribbon stick straight out. Repeat the process, adding ribbons until you've completely covered the letter with ribbon ties.
Photo Mat
Create an elegant photo mat to surround a favorite family photo. Choose 2-inch-wide velvet ribbon that coordinates with the picture frame and the image you plan to display. Cut a piece of card stock or chipboard to fit inside the frame, and then use a ruler and craft knife to cut out the center of the material to create a 2-inch-wide photo mat. Cut four pieces of velvet ribbon to affix on top of the mat with a glue stick or double-sided tape. Use scissors or a craft knife to trim the excess. Place the mat inside the frame first so it sits in front of the image, surrounding it with color and texture.
Velvet Necklace
Make a simple velvet choker to display a metal charm or pendant. Cut a piece of 1/2- to 1-inch-wide velvet ribbon to fit around your neck with 1 inch of overlap. Place the pendant on a metal jump ring sold at jewelry or craft stores and slip the jump ring onto the ribbon. Place a 1-inch-long piece of self-adhesive Velcro between the ends of the ribbon where they overlap. Separate the Velcro and do a simple "running stitch" to secure the Velcro to the ribbon.
Bookmarks
Turn stamped velvet ribbon into a soft bookmark that will make a practical gift for a student, teacher, neighbor or family member. Cut a 6-inch-long piece of 2-inch-wide velvet ribbon. Create an "embossed" impression on the ribbon by placing a rubber stamp rubber side up on an ironing board. Place the velvet ribbon face down atop the stamp. Press an iron set to "high heat" on top of the ribbon for 20 seconds. Remove the ribbon and allow it to cool. Repeat the process to apply images along the length of the ribbon bookmark.
