Wear hair bows in matching colors.
Hair bows have been a customary way for women and girls to ornament their hair for generations. These can be large and voluminous or small and flat. Crafters can embellish hair bows in myriad ways, even personalizing the bows with names or favorite imagery. Creating them is so simple that it could easily be adapted to a party craft for young girls in which they design a bow, assemble it with the help of an adult and decorate it with paint, sequins and beads.
Instructions
1. Select ribbon wider than the barrette onto which it will be affixed. This way the clip in hidden from view when worn. Also, choose ribbon that is stiff or substantive enough that it will hold its shape once glued to the barrette.
2. Cover the top surface of the barrette by winding ribbon around it, if desired. Start at one end overlapping each wrap so the ribbon holds itself in place. Finish wrapping at the opposite end and secure the edge of the ribbon to the underside with hot glue or fabric glue.
3. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to make a bow of the desired size. Cut the piece a little longer than you think the bow will require so that you have enough extra slack to tighten the bow before attaching it.
4. Tie the bow around something steady and narrow. The finger of a willing assistant would work well. Make sure that whatever you tie the bow around has an open end so you can slip the bow off intact.
5. Tighten the bow. This may be a little tricky once it is free, but try to tighten the bow with your thumbs and index fingers while steadying the bow with your middle and ring fingers.
6. Apply a dollop of glue to the barrette where you will place the knot of the bow. Put the bow in the glue and hold it firmly as the glue dries and sets.
7. Add a small drop of glue to the outside top corners of the barrette and press the backside of the bow into the spot, if necessary to keep the bow positioned correctly.
8. Trim the ends of the ribbon and apply sealant to keep the ends from fraying.
