Use assorted ribbons when making a loopy hair bow.
You've got the outfit for that special day picked out, but you aren't sure what to do about your child's hair. Whether for a photo shoot or special occasion, a loopy bow can bring the whole outfit together. A loopy bow is something that can be personalized with your child's favorite colors or by theme, whether it's for Easter or Christmas. It easily clips into a girl's hair whether it's long or short. You can make your own using a needle, thread, ribbons and a barrette clip.
Instructions
1. Choose six pieces of ribbon. The ribbons can be different widths and colors. Seal the ends of the ribbons with clear nail polish or a lighter to make them, so they don't fray.
2. Cut the ribbons to approximately the same length. The length will depend on how big you want your loops in your bow to be.
3. Take a needle and place four pieces of thread about 48 inches long through the eye of your needle.
4. Remove the metal piece that tucks into the barrette.
5. Place the ribbons directly on top of one another. Take the needle with thread running through it and poke it through your ribbons at one end. Be sure to thread through the ribbons in the middle, not at the edge of the ribbons. Bring it all the way through until you hit the knot at the end of your thread.
6. Take your barrette and hold it upside down. Place it on top of the ribbons that you're threading. Take the needle that's attached to the ribbons and push it through the hole of the barrette and the ribbons underneath. Pull until it's tight. Take the needle around the edge of the ribbons, go under the ribbons and bring it back through the hole. Repeat on the other side.
7. Wrap the thread around the inside of the barrette that's closest to where the ribbons are attached. Pull tight.
8. Flip the barrette, so that it's right-side-up. Make a loop out of your ribbons to your desired height. Take the thread and wrap it around the base of the loop at the barrette. Make sure you pull tight each time. Squeeze the base of the ribbons together, so it doesn't end up underneath the barrette.
9. Push the loop to the end of the barrette and continue making loops until you've reached the other end of the barrette. Cut the extra ribbon and seal off the ends.
10. Take the remaining thread and sew it back and forth over and under the barrette until you get to the other side, where you began the loopy bow. Tie some knots when you get to the other end and cut the remaining thread.
11. Fluff and separate the ribbons for the desired look you're going for.
12. Place the metal piece back into the barrette.
