Embroider Hair Bows

Personalize your hair bows with distinct embroidery designs.

Hair bows can liven up any outfit for little girls, teenagers and adults. These decorative hairpieces come in hundreds of different colors and styles, from casual denim fabrics to elegant silk and lacy ribbons. To personalize your hair bows for a more unique look, add a monogram or other embroidered design to the bows. Embroidering a hair bow only takes minutes to complete, depending on your choice of design, and you can choose floss to complement your outfit.

Instructions

1. Cut your ribbon to length with a pair of scissors. For a medium size bow (4 inches), use ribbon 1 ½ inches in width and 24 inches long. Seal the ends of the ribbon by quickly running the end of the ribbon across the flame of a lighter.

2. Prepare to embroider your design on the ribbon. Thread your embroidery needle by inserting a long string of embroidery floss through the needle hole. Tie the end of the floss into a knot.

3. Hold the ribbon firmly in your hand or wrap the ribbon around something like an embroidery loop. Start making single straight stitches in the pattern of your design by bringing the needle down through the same hole of the last stitch made and back up through the ribbon. Continue in this pattern until the design is complete, changing the color of your floss as needed.

4. Put the ribbon right side down on a flat surface. Grab one end of the ribbon and fold 1 inch of the ribbon onto itself. Fold the 1-inch end of ribbon back onto the ribbon a second time. Continue folding the ribbon like this until you have the ribbon in one big loop.

5. Insert your stick pin through the center of the ribbon. Turn the ribbon so the pointed end of the stick pin is up. Use your fingers to pull and separate the 1-inch loop layers of ribbon to shape the bow.

6. Place the large gripper clip in the center of your bow over the stick pin. Remove the stick pin from the center of the bow.

7. Hold the bow firmly and use the needle and thread to make a large basting stitch through the center of the bow. The last stitch should end with the needle on top of the bow. Cut the thread away from the bow, leaving about an inch of thread extending from the bow.

8. Pull the inch of thread tight to gather the loops in the center of the bow. Wrap the piece of thread around the center of the bow three times and tie the thread in a knot on the back of the bow.

9. Glue the center knot on the center of the knot with the hot glue gun and attach the French barrette on the backside of the bow with the glue gun.
