Trim Babies' Hair

Only cut off bits of hair grasped between your fingers; never freehand cut.

While babies do not usually have loads of hair on their heads, the small bits they do have can still become unruly. Hair can cover the baby's face or grow unevenly -- long in one place and short in another. This can make the baby look untidy. With an assistant and the right equipment, you safely can trim your baby's hair.

Instructions

1. Get an assistant with whom your baby is comfortable -- for instance, a friend or family member -- to hold your baby in her lap for the haircut. The baby should sit in the assistant's lap for several minutes before the haircut starts; this will give the baby a chance to settle down. The goal is to make sure the baby is comfortable and calm before the haircut begins.

2. Show the shears to your baby. Hold the shears a safe distance from your baby and gently clip the air with them a few times so the baby can see them well. Doing this will help satisfy the baby's curiosity and make her more comfortable with them.

3. Trim the bangs. Use a soft-bristled baby brush to smooth the baby's hair, atop her head and down the sides. Brush bangs forward and grasp them gently between your index and middle finger, ¼ inch from the tips. Snip off the small bit of hair extending from your fingers.

4. Continue snipping off the hair in the front in ¼-inch increments until it is trimmed to your liking. Do not snip any closer than two inches from the scalp. If you want an all-over trim, you can snip the rest of the hair around her head as you did with the bangs.
