Use holiday printed ribbons as fillers for a festive special occasion bow.
Just when you thought a boutique bow couldn't get any cuter, you spy a bow with fillers sitting beautifully atop the head of an adorable little girl. Don't worry, you can jazz up any boutique bow by adding simple fillers such as surrounding loops and ribbon spikes. Combine different sizes, textures and colors of ribbon to create a custom hair accessory masterpiece.
Instructions
1. Remove the pink boutique hair bow from its clip. Discard the clip.
2. Pass both ends of both 30-inch lengths of 3/8-inch ribbon quickly through the flame of a cigarette lighter to heat-seal them. Lay the heat-sealed ribbons aside.
3. Cut a V shape into both ends of the 6-inch length of 1-inch white ribbon. Pass the cut ends quickly through the flame of the cigarette lighter to heat seal them. Repeat for the 6-inch lengths of pink ribbon and brown ribbon. Place the heat-sealed ribbons and the cigarette lighter aside.
4. Fold the 30-inch length of white ribbon in half and press the fold firmly between your fingertips to crease the center. There should be 15 inches of ribbon on both sides of the center crease. Unfold the ribbon.
5. Take one end of the 30-inch piece of white ribbon and fold it over to align the short end with the creased center of the ribbon. Crease the new fold. Repeat for the other end of the ribbon so the ribbon is now creased in three places. Unfold the ribbon. These three creases divide the ribbon into four equal 7-1/2 inch segments.
6. Hold the 30-inch length of white ribbon vertically between the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand. Use your dominant hand to hold the top end of the ribbon. Curve the ribbon outward while bringing the top end to meet the first crease. This makes the first loop, which resembles a backward D. Place the short end of the ribbon between the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand to hold it in place.
7. Place the thumb and pointer finger of your dominant hand over the second crease of the 30-inch piece of white ribbon. Bring the second crease up and around to the first crease so the ribbon forms a second loop that looks exactly the same as the backward D of the first loop. Use the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand to hold the ribbon in place. The first two loops are now complete and together they resemble a backward B.
8. Pick up the threaded needle with your dominant hand. Insert the point of the needle up through the ribbon where the top end of the ribbon met the first crease. Sew two small stitches to hold the first loop in place. Push the tip of the needle up through the ribbon where the second crease met the first crease. Sew two small stitches to hold the second loop in place. Push the needle back up toward you. Allow the needle to dangle in place since you will need it again in a moment.
9. Bring the third crease of the 30-inch length of white ribbon around and in so it is directly on top of the first crease. This makes the third loop. It should resemble a D. Hold the ribbon in place with the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand.
10. Bring the loose end of the 30-inch length of white ribbon around and in so that the loose end meets the center of the bow. This creates the fourth loop. It should also resemble a D. The 30-inch length of white ribbon should now have four loops that look like butterfly wings. Hold the end of the ribbon in place with the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand.
11. Pick up the dangling needle with your dominant hand and sew two small stitches through the place where the third crease met the first crease to hold the third loop in place. Sew two small stitches through the place where the ribbon end met the center of the bow to hold the fourth loop in place.
12. Knot the thread. Cut and discard the excess. Place the completed white surround bow aside. Rethread the needle and knot the thread ends to prepare it for future use. Set the threaded needle aside.
13. Pick up the 30-inch length of 3/8-inch brown ribbon and create a surround bow in exactly the same way as you created the white surround bow. Set the completed brown surround bow aside. Rethread the needle and knot the thread ends to prepare it for future use. Set the threaded needle aside.
14. Set the white surround bow on a flat surface with the curved edges pointing up. Place a dab of hot glue in the center of the white surround bow. Hold the brown surround bow with the curved edges pointing up. Press the center of the brown surround bow into the dab of hot glue on the white surround bow to join the two surround bows at their centers. Set the joined surround bows aside.
15. Lay the 6-inch length of 1-inch white ribbon horizontally on a flat work surface. Pick up the 6-inch lengths of 1-inch pink and brown ribbon. Cross the pieces in an X shape and center the crossed ribbon on top of the 6-inch length of white ribbon.
16. Stick the tip of threaded needle through the center of the stack of 6-inch ribbon pieces. Wrap the thread three times tightly around the center of the crossed ribbons. Knot the thread. Cut and discard the excess. Set the stack of sewn ribbon spikes aside.
17.Pick up the pink boutique hair bow and flip it upside down. Squeeze a line of glue along the back of the pink boutique hair bow. Press the stack of sewn ribbon spikes right side down into the line of hot glue. Hold in place 20 seconds while the glue sets.
18. Squeeze a 1-inch line of hot glue along the back of the ribbon spikes. Hold the joined surround bows with the curved edges facing down. Press the center of the joined surround bows into the line of hot glue. Hold in place 20 seconds while the glue sets.
19. Squeeze a line of hot glue along the back of the French barrette. Place the back of the bow onto the line of hot glue. Hold in place 20 seconds while the glue sets. Allow the glue to dry before using the clip.
