Starting a small in-home hair business can be easier than you think.
Starting a small in-home hair business can be a beneficial way to get started on this particular career path. Attempting to start a business can be hard work and a lot of money, so beginning at home is sometimes a necessary step if you are low on funds. Often, working out of your home allows you to not only make more money but charge less as well, since you aren't paying anyone for a chair or to have their name attached to yours.
Instructions
1. Take the tests and become certified through your state.
Take the tests needed to get your certification so that your clients know that you did go to school to do hair. This is one of the most important parts of the entire process. Nobody is going to trust you with their hair if you cannot prove that you know what you are doing with it. They have to live with the look they are given, therefore, being certified is important.
2. Apply for a business license. If you do not have a business license, you are more than likely practicing illegally. Contact your local department of licensing and ask about an in-home business license. There may be restrictions on what you can do, or they may tell you that you don't need one for doing hair.
3. Create a price list. Figure out what your time is worth and what it costs for the products you are using. You want to be reasonable so people will come to you for their hair care needs. When people call you or you tell people about your hair business, they will want to know what you charge.
4. Students are always looking for a deal.
Create an ad for the local newspapers, and Craigslist.org. These are cheap or free advertising that are, hopefully, going to bring in business. Placing ads in high school and college newspapers in your area will help you not only advertise but potentially bring in a lot of clients as students are always looking for an inexpensive place to go for special occasions such as prom and graduation. Posting on your networking page is another quick way for all your friends and family to know about your business.
5. Purchase all the hair care products that you feel you may need.
Invest in hair products. If you are wanting to make an in-home business out of doing hair, then you need to have all the beauty products that will allow you to be successful. Go to your local beauty supply store and purchase different shades of dye, hair clips, pins, combs, hair products, shampoos, conditioners, perming equipment, rollers and anything else that you will use when doing someone's hair.
6. Ask friends, family and neighbors if you can do their hair while you wait for your business to get off the ground. The best way to boost business is by word of mouth. If other people like what they see, they are more likely to call you than go somewhere else.
