Hair bows for little girls can cost quite a bit in the store, but you can make them for just a few dollars at home and in under ten minutes. Grosgrain ribbon, the best for basic bows, can be purchased at most craft stores in dozens of designs and colors; make one or more for each holiday, as well as to go with every outfit. The little girl in your life will be set with bows well through elementary school.
Instructions
1. Cut the ribbon at a slant and coat the ends with clear nail polish. Allow the ribbon to dry before making the bow. This will prevent the ribbon from fraying while working on it or wearing it.
2. Fold the ribbon 3.5 inches from one end. The wrong sides of the ribbon should be together, with the right sides facing out.
3. Fold the ribbon over again, four inches from your first fold. The right side should still be facing out. You have now made a large loop. Continue wrapping the ribbon until you have wrapped all of it.
4. Push a pin through the middle, both vertically and horizontally, of the ribbon. The pin is going through five layers of ribbon at this point.
5. Separate the loops by slowly and carefully pulling them apart. You should be forming an "X" shape on either side of the pin in the middle. There are two loops and one tail on each side of the "X".
6. Thread your needle vertically through the middle of the bow several times. It should look like you are weaving it in the ribbon. Take the pin out and pull the thread tight. Wrap the thread around the middle several times and tie it off through the ribbon. Trim the excess thread.
7. Cut another piece of ribbon about four inches long. Tie a knot in the middle of the ribbon.
8. Place a dab of hot glue on the thread in the middle of the bow on the right side. Press the knot on top and press firmly. The tails of the knot should go in the same direction as the thread.
9. Put hot glue on the top of a clip and stick the bow to it. Allow it to dry thoroughly. Be careful not to get the tails of the knot glued under the bow.
10. Pull the tails of the knot underneath the clip and trim them so they just overlap. Place a dab of hot glue on the clip and press one tail to it. Add another dab on top, gluing the second tail on top.
