Spend a crafty afternoon transforming small strips of ribbon into a playful, girly hair accessory by making a pom-pom hair bow. These colorful cloth ribbon bows are perfect for dressing up plain pigtails, ponytails or just clipping bangs out of a child's sweet little eyes. Use them to add spirit to a cheer squads hair, sparks of color to a dance recital outfit or just something special to an everyday outfit.
Instructions
1. Cut 20 3-inch-long strips of 1/2-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon. Heat seal the ends by holding them near, but not in, the flame of a lighter for a second. This prevents the ends from fraying over time from normal wear and tear.
2. Cut a 3-inch piece of elastic cord. Stack all of the strips of ribbon, and wrap the cord around the center of the stack twice before tying the ends together. Wrap the cord tight, so it bunches the center of the ribbon causing the ends to fan out at least slightly. You can fan them further later. Trim the ends of the elastic cord.
3. Cut a 3-inch-long piece of 1/8-inch-wide ribbon. Tie the piece around the stack of ribbon, making sure it is over the elastic cord in order to hide it. Trim the ends of the ribbon.
4. Fan out the ends of the ribbon to create a half-sphere pom-pom shape with the knot from the ribbon tied around the center on the bottom, or flat side, of the pom-pom. Spray the pom-pom with spray fabric stiffener lightly. You want the stiffener to add some stability to the ribbon, but you don't want to douse it, thus causing the ribbon to wilt. Let the stiffener dry overnight.
5. Attach the pom-pom to an alligator clip with a dot of hot glue where the knot from the center tie is on the underside of the ribbon. Let the glue cool for two minutes before wearing the bow.
