Newborn hair is so fine that metal hair clips can sometimes tear it or tug uncomfortably on the scalp. If you want to use bows on your newborn but want to use a gentler clip, you can use one made with Velcro to attach itself to the hair. Even though there are a variety of Velcro hair bows available for purchase in stores and online, you can create your own for much less money. Making your own bows also allows you to customize the pattern, color and size.
Instructions
1. Cut a length of 1/2-inch-wide ribbon to be long enough to accommodate the preferred bow size. For a small bow, cut a 4-inch piece. For a medium bow, cut a 6-inch piece. For a large bow, cut an 8-inch piece.
2. Tie the ribbon into a bow. Use your fingers to shape the loops of the bow and pull the two tail pieces to be equal in length.
3. Stick a threaded needle through the bottom of the bow to come out the middle. Run the needle and thread back and forth through the center of the bow a few times to bind it. Knot the thread beneath the bow and cut away the needle once the bow is secure.
4. Apply a dot of hot glue on the front of the bow, in the middle. Press a small jewel, button or other embellishment over the glue and allow it to dry.
5. Apply a line of glue over the top of a Velcro hair clip, available in beauty supply stores and online.
6. Center the bow over the top of the clip and press straight down over the glue.
7. Trim away any glue wisps that are sticking out around the bow after it has dried.
