You can easily make your own ribbon hair ties with grosgrain, poly-blend or satin ribbons and an elastic hair tie. Embellish the strands of ribbon with colorful pearls for added dimension and style. Look for glass pearl beads and a wide variety of ribbon at your local craft store. These colorful and creative ribbon hair ties are simple and quick to make; consider them the next time you need a gift for a young girl.
Instructions
1. Cut 12 8-inch lengths of 1/2-inch-wide ribbon. The ribbon can be any color, pattern or a mix of both. You can also use 1/4-inch-wide ribbon, 1-inch-wide ribbon or any combination to make your own hair ribbon ties; just cut enough strips to fit around the perimeter of the elastic hair tie.
2. Cut a 12-inch length of thread and insert through a needle. Double the thread so that the loose ends are even and tie a double overhand knot.
3. Insert the needle through the center of one end of one ribbon, pulling until the knot stops the thread. Thread a pearl over the needle and onto the ribbon. Thread the pearl to within 2 inches of the opposite end of the ribbon. Tie a tight overhand knot in the ribbon behind the pearl. Thread as many pearls as you like to decorate your ribbon strand; remember to tie a knot after each one to hold it in place. When you finish adding the pearls, snip the thread above the knot to remove it.
4. Repeat Step 3 for each of your ribbon strands.
5. Tie each pearl-ribbon strand onto an elastic hair tie with a double overhand knot. Leave the tails of the ribbons facing up to add fluff to your ribbon tie, or glue the tail ends to the backside of the ribbons with a glue gun.
