Bows are not the only craft you can make from ribbons. Those strips of tightly woven fabric sold in a variety of colors, widths and patterns at craft and fabric stores hold a whole world of sculpting possibilities from plants and animals to inanimate objects such as ice cream. Fold, wrap and cut a few strips of orange ribbon into a friendly little goldfish you can then attach to a hair clip, homemade card or garment.
Instructions
1. Cut a 6-inch piece of 1-inch-wide ribbon. Cut a 3-inch piece of 1/2-inch-wide ribbon.
2. Lay the piece of 1-inch-wide ribbon on your work surface horizontally. Fold the left end over to the right end. Crease the fold by pinching it with your fingers. Unfold the ribbon. Fold the left half of the ribbon down and to the right so the top point of the fold falls on the center crease. Fold the right half of the ribbon down and to the left, again so the top point falls on the crease.
3. Wrap the 1/2-inch-wide ribbon around the 1-inch-wide ribbon where the two halves of the ribbon overlap. The 1/2-inch ribbon will wrap around roughly three times. End the wrap on the backside of the fish -- the side facing your work surface. Trim the 1/2-inch trim, if necessary, and secure the end of the ribbon with a dot of fabric glue. Hold the end in place for 2 minutes to give the glue time to become tacky enough to hold the ribbon.
4. Fold the ends of the 1-inch-wide ribbon in half lengthwise. Trim the ends at a 45-degree angle slanting down from the folded edge. Heat seal the cut ends by bringing them near the flame of a lighter for a second. Do not stick the cut ends in the flame; this will cause your ribbon to burn and the cut edges to warp.
5. Attach a craft eye to the head -- the looped part of the 1-inch-wide ribbon -- of the fish with a dot of fabric glue.
