Crochet Knit tops For Chihuahuas

Chihuhuas often need an extra layer of warmth when they go outdoors.

Due to their small size, chihuahuas can get chilled easily. Especially during winter months, chihuahua owners need to provide extra insulation for their furry friends. One creative way to do this is to crochet a simple, yet custom, dog sweater for your chihuahua. You will need a basic understanding of crochet stitches and techniques in order to complete this project.

Instructions

1. Using worsted-weight yarn and a size H hook, begin with a starting chain of approximately 38 stitches. Join the first chain to the last in order to form a circle, being careful not to twist the chain. Chain one and complete the following pattern around: single crochet in the first chain, double crochet in the second chain. Join with a slip stitch to complete the round.

2. Use the same pattern stitch (single crochets and double crochets alternated) for the next six rounds, joining at the end of the round each time with a slip stitch. For these rounds, be sure that you put a double crochet into each single crochet stitch from the previous round, and make a single crochet in each double crochet stitch from the previous round. This will help to keep your rounds even.

3. Decrease the size of the next row; slip stitch in the first nine stitches, complete your pattern stitch in the next 20 stitches, and leave the last nine stitches unworked. For this portion of the dog sweater you will work back and forth in rows instead of going around in circles. Chain one and turn, making your pattern stitches across five more rows.

4. For the next row, work your pattern stitch across the row but do not turn at the end. Instead, chain nine stitches and join with a slip stitch to the other side of your row, making a new circle. You will work in the round using the stitches of this circle from here on out.

5. Work four more rounds of your pattern stitch; on the first one, you will make your pattern stitches in each stitch from the previous row as well as each of the chain stitches you made. In all subsequent rounds you will work your pattern stitches in every stitch around. Fasten off at the end of these four rounds and cut your working yarn, then weave in your ends using a large-eye blunt needle. To put the sweater on your dog, fit the smaller opening around his head and the larger opening around his waist.
