Make Lined Hair Bow Clips

Liven up your daughter's hairstyles with colorful bows that coordinate with her outfit. Instead of retying the bow throughout the day, attach the cute accessory to a metal hair clip that snaps easily into place. Prevent the clip from slipping off of her hair by lining it with velvet or a thin piece of craft foam to keep it secure. Use inexpensive craft supplies to complete the craft and generate enough adorable hair accessories for every day of the week.

Instructions

1. Measure the length of the metal hair clip with a ruler. Create the bow for the handmade hair bow clip by cutting a piece of 1/2-inch to 1-inch-wide ribbon to 6 times the length of the hair clip. If the hair clip is 2 inches long, for example, cut a 12-inch-long piece of ribbon.

2. Hold one end of the ribbon so it's hanging 1/2 inch off the left side of the clip. Run the ribbon along the clip to the right, and then fold it over and travel back toward the left when you hit the end of the clip. Repeat the process until you have no ribbon left---you should have a bow-like shape with two loops on each side. Set the metal hair clip aside.

3. Cut a 2-inch-long piece of 12-gauge craft wire with sharp scissors and twist the wire in the center of the ribbon to secure the loops. Snip off the excess wire.

4. Open the metal hair clip. Place adhesive dots along the top, flat surface of the clip where the bow will sit. Press the bow onto the hair clip. Cut a 2-inch-long piece of the same ribbon, wrap it under the hair clip and over the ribbon bow and tie a knot to conceal the wire. Use scissors to trim all of the ribbon ends at an angle.

5. Embellish the bow, if desired, with glittering accents like rhinestones, sequins or plastic gems. Affix the accents to the ribbon with adhesive dots.

6. Line the top and bottom inside surfaces of the clip that will rest against the hair with craft foam. Use scissors to trim strips of foam that are 1/8 inch shorter than the hair clip and thin enough so they won't hang over the edges. Affix the strips with adhesive dots and press firmly to secure.
