Make Velcro Hair Barrettes for Babies
Velcro hair barrettes are comfortable hair accents for little babies. The Velcro easily grips the fine hair strands, keeping the barrette in the hair longer than any of the other plastic or metal clips. They're easy and inexpensive to make, and each barrette can be accented with a variety of ribbons, bows, buttons, appliques and fun craft beads.
Instructions
1. Cut the Velcro to the width and length of your choice. Barrettes can be 1/2 inch wide by 1 inch long, or they can be wider or longer. Cut as many as you can from your 1/2 yard piece of Velcro.
2. Pin and sew one of the short sides of the Velcro barrette together, using a zigzag stitch right on the edge. Use the sewing machine or sew by hand. This will hinge the hook and loop parts together, so that the barrette can stay in one piece as it is opened and closed.
3. Decide on what you will use to decorate the barrettes. Decorate them in sets of pairs with the same design. Make your ribbon bows, separate your silk flowers, and mix and match your buttons to get the styles that you want. Line up all of your choices, making sure there is enough for each pair.
4. Use fabric paint to paint the outside of your Velcro barrettes to match the accessories for each pair of barrettes. Some of the barrette may be exposed even after you attach the ribbons and buttons.
5. Open the Velcro barrette and pin the ribbons and silk flowers onto the top layer. Move the bottom part of the barrette out of the way.
6. Use the sewing machine or a needle to tack the accessories to the Velcro barrette base. Sew the accessories onto the top of the Velcro. Make sure the bottom layer is out of the way as you make your stitches. Trim away any excess strings.
