Colorful ribbons can be turned into a girl's hair bow.
Girls from toddlers to teens love to get dressed up and fix their hair. A pretty hair bow adds a finishing touch to a young lady's ensemble. Store-bought hair bows can be expensive, while creating your own costs only pennies and allows you to make enough for all of your girl's outfits, so she can go out in style each and every time. The bows also make thoughtful gifts for all those special girls in your life.
Instructions
1. Remove the inside metal piece from the barrette.
2. Thread the needle using white or clear sewing thread. Pull the loose ends together so they are even and make a knot.
3. Select two to three different 1-inch-wide ribbons in coordinating colors or various shades of the same color. Keeping the ribbons on the spools they came on, hold the ends of the ribbon together so they are layered on top of each other.
4. Push the needle and thread through the ends of the ribbons you are holding, up from the bottom and about a 1/4 inch in from the end of the ribbons. Pull the thread through until the knot is against the ribbon.
5. Make a 2-inch loop with the layers of ribbons held together and hold it against the underside. Make another 2-inch loop of ribbon, which should be facing the opposite direction, and hold it also on the underside. Continue making loops of the ribbon, in the same fashion as making a bow for a present, until it is as full as you want. Fan the loops out by firmly holding the center of the ribbon with your thumb and forefinger, and twisting so the loops form a circle.
6. Sew the bow together by pushing the needle and thread down through the center top of the looped ribbon; pull the thread clear through. Push the needle back through the middle from underneath and pull the thread through. Do this two more times, pulling the thread tightly as you sew. Finish with the needle on the underside. Cut the thread, leaving a 3-inch tail and tie in a knot to secure.
7. Cut a piece of of the ribbon to the right size to cover the top of the barrette. Hot glue the ribbon in place and let dry. Glue the bow onto the center of the barrette and, if desired, glue a decorative button into the center of the bow.
