Hair Tools

A range of hair care tools can help you get the perfect style.

A variety of hair care tools are available to help women get the look they want. From accessories to curl or straighten hair or remove frizz, the number of products can be overwhelming. Manufacturers truly have something for everyone when it comes to making hair care easier and more accessible.

Curling Irons and Wands

Women with limp, fine hair have options for creating curly, kinky hairstyles. Look for a ceramic curling iron with multiple heat settings so you can match the temperature to your hair (i.e., medium heat for fine hair, hot for thick hair). The barrel size determines which type of curl you achieve: The smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl. Curling wands move one step beyond the traditional iron. Usually marketed as "porcelain conical wands," curling wands have no springloaded tong to hold the hair; instead, the wand is packaged with a heatproof glove worn to hold hair in place when you wind it around the barrel. Conical wands tend to provide more professional and longer-lasting results than do ordinary curling irons.

Flat Irons

A flat iron (sometimes marketed as a hair straightener) is a must for women wanting a sleek style that lasts for days. Look for flat irons with ceramic plates, which tend to last longer and get hotter than do old-fashioned metal ones. Also consider your hair's length and natural texture. For instance, if your hair is thick and long, you'll want wider plates, whereas if your hair is short, a thinner-plated iron will be easier to handle. Seek products that allow you to adjust the heat, much like the curling iron, as the heat from flat irons is much harsher, and you will use this product closer to your head than you will a curling iron.

Hairdryers

A hairdryer is a necessity, especially if you are not blessed with manageable wash-and-wear hair. Hairdryers come with a variety of attachments and accessories and, if used properly, improve your hair's quality and style. Modern hairdryers have a variety of heat settings (including a cold setting, helpful to put a natural hold on the hair without using cream or gel), and power settings from very powerful (a heavy blast), to low (for finer hair). To get the best value for your money, get a dryer packaged with accessories such as a concentrator nozzle, a diffuser, and an ionic option. A concentrator nozzle helps you get a salon shine at home, while a diffuser helps curly hair because it distributes the air to control frizz.
