The loose tails of a cheer bow emphasize the cheerleader's head movements during a routine.
If you have ever been to a football game or a cheerleading competition, you have certainly noticed that cheerleaders wear matching uniforms, hairstyles and hair bows. The hair bow style designated as a cheer bow features two perky loops and two downward hanging tails. The tails of the bow move up and down in response to the cheerleader's movements.
Hair Fastener
Since a cheer bow must stay firmly in place during jumps, flips and cheer routines, the bow must be attached to a hair fastener that will not slip out of the hair, such as a slip-resistant ponytail holder or a French barrette. Over time, a ponytail holder may stretch out, making it necessary to remove the bow and to sew it to a new ponytail holder. When using a French barrette, first pull the hair into a ponytail using a ponytail holder. Then clip the cheer bow directly on top of the ponytail.
Ribbon
You can choose any type of ribbon to make a cheer bow, including satin, grosgrain or sequined ribbon. Ribbon colors should coordinate with the cheer uniform. Ribbons can be printed, solid or striped. If ordering ribbon or bows online, start with only one bow or enough ribbon to make only one bow. Verify the color matches the uniform before ordering enough bows or ribbon for the entire team.
Center Accent
The center of the bow is where the ribbons are pinched and tied in place. The bow center is wrapped with a piece of coordinating ribbon to conceal the string that ties the bow together. When the coordinating center ribbon is tied in a knot before wrapping it around the center of the bow, it is called a center knot. Alternatively, you can glue a decorated bottle cap or button to the bow's center.
Tail Decorations
Embroider the two hanging tails of the cheer bow with the school name, the name of the team mascot or the cheerleader's name, or small images such as animal paws or a cheer horn. Add rhinestones to reflect gym lights and add glamor to the cheer bow.
