Create korker ribbons by heating ribbon wound around wooden dowels.
Octopus bows are composed of korker ribbons hanging from a small hair bow. The korker ribbons extending out from the center make up the legs of the octopus, giving this hair bow it's name. Mix patterned and solid-colored ribbons when making octopus bows. Make variations to match outfits, for holidays or for specific events like cheering competitions. Create an inventory of these bows, and give them to friends and family members as gifts. Or sell them at boutiques, craft shows and bazaars.
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees F.
2. Hold the end of your 3/8-inch ribbon at the top of a wooden dowel. Secure the end of the ribbon to the dowel with a wooden clothespin.
3. Twist the ribbon around the dowel, winding it until you reach the end. Secure the ribbon to the end of the dowel with a wooden clothespin, and cut away the excess ribbon. Make four, long korker ribbons this way.
4. Put the ribbon-wrapped dowels inside a disposable foil pan. Set the pan inside the oven for 25 minutes. Remove the pan, and let it cool completely.
5. Cut 3/8-inch ribbon to 8-inch lengths. Cut three of these ribbons.
6. Fold the end of the ribbon to the middle of its back side, and glue it in place with a hot glue gun. Fold the other end of the ribbon the same way, and glue it in place. Do this to all three ribbons.
7. Create an "X" shape with two of the looped 3/8-inch ribbons. Glue the ribbons together. Position the third looped ribbon centered in between the X-shaped loops, creating a six-loop bow, and glue it in place.
8. Wind each of the korker ribbons around a hair elastic, at least twice. Push the korker ribbons together on the hair elastic, and glue the hair elastic and the korker ribbons to the bow.
9. Cut a piece of 3/8-inch ribbon to 5-inches in length. Wind the ribbon around the center of the bow, making sure the hair elastic and korkers are under the ribbon. Glue the ends of the ribbon together, behind the bow.
