Hair bows are a favorite accessory of young girls, but the cost of a bow to match every outfit can begin to add up. Making your own hair bows with inexpensive craft-store supplies allows you to save money and personalize the bow to suit your needs. You can choose ribbon colors to coordinate with a particular outfit or to support a sports team -- a popular choice among cheerleaders. The tuxedo hair bow is a classic style named for the elegant bow tie form it mimics.
Instructions
1. Cut your ribbon to approximately 8 inches. If you would like a bigger bow, cut a longer piece; for smaller bows, cut a shorter piece. To prevent the ends from fraying, quickly run the open flame from a lighter along each end.
2. Overlap the ends of the ribbon to create a big loop. Pinch the loop at the center to make the two smaller loops that form the bow. Wrap a small piece of floral wire (about 4 inches) tightly around the center to secure the bow shape.
3. Wrap the excess floral wire around the barrette or hair clip to attach it to the bow, making sure to leave the part of the clip that attaches to hair free of the wire. Cut any excess wire.
4. Cut a smaller piece of ribbon to approximately 3 inches in length. Cut down the width of this piece to approximately 2/3 inch.
5. Tie the smaller piece of ribbon into a simple knot. Hot glue the knot to the center of the bow. Wrap the ends around to the back of the bow and secure to the hair clip with hot glue, removing any excess ribbon.
