Easy Stepbystep Hair Bows

It's easy to make hair bows with embellishments such as ribbons, rhinestones or vintage jewelry. You can find ready-to make metal barrettes and hair pins at a craft store. Get creative and make hair bows that suit your style, match an outfit or fit a special occasion.

Embellishments

One of the easiest ways to make decorative hair bows is to glue a line of embellishments on a metal barrette. Look for flat-backed rhinestones, seashells, flat-backed glass cabochons and other small craft items to attach to the barrette with a glue gun or clear craft glue. If you're in a hurry, use a glue gun for a barrette ready in minutes. Craft glue like E-6000 may take longer to dry, but the hold is more secure than that produced by a glue gun. Another idea for an easy hair bow is to glue vintage jewelry to the flat head of a hair clip. To make an interchangeable hair bow, clip an earring to the hair clip.

Crystal Bead Hair Bows

String strands of crystal beads to hang from a barrette to make an easy and elegant hair bow. You'll need six to eight strands of 4-mm beads measuring 4 inches long and enough flat-backed rhinestones to cover the metal facing of your barrette. First you'll need to string the strands of crystal beads for your hair bow. In addition to 4-mm, center-drilled beads, you'll need clear monofilament line or elastic beading cord, and one top-drilled bead for the end of each strand. Cut your beading cord 9 inches long to account for doubling the cord as you string and for tying the strand onto the barrette. Begin by stringing your top-drilled bead to the center of your strand; double the cord and string the remaining beads over both strands. Leave enough room at the end of the strand to tie it around the barrette with a double knot. If you add a drop of jeweler's glue to the knot, it will strengthen the bond. The final step is to glue a row of rhinestones along the width of the barrette clasp to cover the beading cord.

Flowing Ribbon Hair Bows

Make simple ribbon hair bows with a barrette, 10-inch strands of 1/4-inch ribbons, colorful. flat-backed rhinestones, glue sticks and a glue gun. Tie one end of each of the ribbons all the way across the barrette in a double knot. Make sure the knot falls behind the barrette facing. Cut off any excess ribbons beyond the ends of the knots. Attach the rhinestones across the barrette's metal facing with a glue gun to add a little sparkle to your hair bow. You don't have to attach anything across the barrette; just let the ribbons flow. Rhinestones, beads or pearls will add design flair and ensure that the metal will remain hidden as your ribbons move.
