Boutique Loopy Hair Bow Instructions

For a true boutique look, try mixing different patterns of ribbon together.

The loopy, decorative hair bows sold in boutiques can make fun accessories for any outfit. Unfortunately though, they tend to come with an inflated price tag. Luckily, it is easy to make your own bows yourself, allowing you the freedom to design them according to your own tastes. Try giving them as gifts or selling them at craft shows.

Instructions

1. Remove the inner metal piece from your barrette and set it aside for later.

2. Measure and cut six pieces of ribbon, 3 feet long. Coat one cut end of each ribbon with clear nail polish to prevent fraying.

3. Measure and cut four pieces of thread, 4 feet long. Gather the ends of the threads together and insert through the eye of the needle. Slide the threads through the needle until the needle is in the center of the lengths of thread. Gather the ends of the thread together and tie them in a knot.

4. Lay the pieces of ribbon on top of each other, being careful to line up the polish-covered ends. Insert the needle and thread through the layered pieces of ribbon, about 1/2-inch from the end. Pull the thread all the way through the ribbon layers until the knot stops at the back.

5. Lay the ribbon against the side of the barrette that doesn't have the hinge, lining up the sewn end of the ribbon with the end of the barrette. Thread the needle through the hole in the end of the barrette and pull the thread through. Continue making stitches around the ribbon and through the hole in the barrette until the ribbon is secured to the barrette.

6. Turn the barrette over so the ribbon side is showing. Holding the ribbon still gathered together, make a loop between 1 to 4 inches in height, depending on how tall you want the loops to be. Wrap the thread around the ribbon loop and the barrette, securing them together.

7. Make another similar-sized loop with your ribbon. Wrap the thread around this new loop of ribbon and the barrette, securing them together. Continue making loops and securing them to the barrette until you reach the other end of the barrette, making sure to pull the loops tightly against each other.

8. Secure the ribbon to the other end of the barrette by making stitches through the ribbon and the hole in the end of the barrette. Make as many stitches as it takes until the ribbon feels secured against the barrette.

9. Cut off the remaining ribbon at the end of the barrette. Apply clear nail polish to the cut strands of ribbon to keep them from fraying.

10. Carefully reattach the inner piece of the barrette. Spread out the loops of ribbon to create a full-looking hair bow.
