Using a length of gathered ribbon, you can make a bow that resembles a flower. Once you layer the rows of ribbon together to make the flower, add a center to complete it. You can use the ribbon bow as a topping for your gift-wrapped packages or as a decoration you can wear. Make a lot of these ribbon bows while you watch television so you have a handy stockpile when you need them.
Instructions
1. Cut a 12- to 18-inch length of ribbon. Cut the ends at an angle to prevent them from fraying. Cut a 48-inch length of thread.
2. Thread your needle. Double the thread over and tie a knot in the end by wrapping the end of the thread around your index finger and then using your thumb to roll it off your finger.
3. Insert the needle into one edge of the ribbon. Make loose stitches by going in and out of it every half inch. Stitch enough so that you can form a circle with the ribbon for the base of your flower.
4. Layer the longer end of the ribbon under the cut edge so that you can work from the back of the flower. Put three tight stitches where the ribbon overlaps to hold it in place.
5. Work on making a circle that is a little larger than the first by making tight stitches every half inch. Make sure to layer the ribbon for the current circle about 1/4 inch up from the edge of the previous circle so that you get a layered look from the front, creating flower petals.
6. Keep making stitching in larger and larger circles until you come to the end of your length of ribbon. Secure the end of ribbon to the back of the flower using three tight stitches. Cut your thread.
7. Sew a button to the center front of the layered ribbon flower to give it a completed center.
8. Hot glue a clasp pin to the center back of the flower if you want to wear it as a pin. Use double-sided tape if you want to attach the flower bow to a package.
