Use velvet to copy the shape of a rose.
A cluster of velvet roses is a lush decoration for a winter hat. They are equally at home on a wool hat with a brim or a velvet cloche. Wine-red roses are especially stunning on a black velvet hat. This method can also be used to make felt flowers for a more casual look. Felt will not unravel, so you can make tightly wound roses from 2-inch strips of felt.
Instructions
1. Cut a 4-inch-wide strip of velvet 12 inches long.
2. Fold the strip in half by bringing the long sides together with the right side of the fabric facing out.
3. Thread your needle with 30 inches of thread, and knot the ends together. Starting at one end, begin to roll the strip up loosely, with the folded edge on top. When you have rolled up 4 inches of the strip, pinch the bottom edges together and stitch through the roll 1/2 inch from this edge.
4. Continue rolling the strip and stitching the bottom edge to hold the fabric in place until you are 3 inches from the end. Roll the top edge of the end of the strip down to the bottom of the rose and stitch it in place. This will open the outer petals of the rose.
5. Pull the top folds of the rose apart to give it a looser look. Sew a sprig of velvet leaves to the base of the rose.
