Keeping the area around the eyes clean may help avoid tear stains.
A bichon frise is a dog known for its gentle and playful nature. Discoloration of a bichon frise's white, fluffy hair not only detracts from the dog's appearance but serves as an alert to potential health problems. Removing the brown spots---or tear stains---from the area under the eyes can be a daunting task. Like many small dogs, the breed requires a certain amount of grooming. While a groomer should be able to eliminate the discoloration under the eyes, a few home treatments address both the cause and the symptom.
Instructions
1. Use a dog shampoo to remove hardened or crusted matter around the eyes. Excessive build-up can cause a brown stain. Rub the stain gently with a washcloth. Avoid getting soap in the eyes.
2. Add 1 tsp. of natural plain yogurt to the dog's dry food for one to two weeks to help boost the live active culture count in its stomach.
3. Add white vinegar to the dog's water dish once a day for one to two weeks. Start with 1/4 tsp. vinegar on the first day, add 1/2 tsp. the second day and 1 tsp. the third day and thereafter. Because of the dog's keen sense of smell, adding an entire teaspoon on the first day may cause it to avoid the water dish. The stain should fade in two weeks. If not, after two weeks, repeat the process.
4. Evaluate your dog's food to determine if it provides necessary nutrients. Use a high-quality, breed-specific dog food---if you do not already do so---and watch for changes.
5. Combine baking soda and water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the stained area, using caution to avoid the eyes, and allow it to dry. Carefully remove the dried substance and gently rinse the area with lukewarm water.
6. Inspect your home to identify potential sources of allergens. If your dog constantly rubs his nose against the floor or ground, or frequently sneezes, he may be allergic to something in your home. Allergies cause excessive eye drainage, which results in stains to the area around the eyes. Seek a veterinarian's care to identify and eliminate sources of allergies.
7. Purchase a tear stain remover from your local pet supplies store.
