Use velvet material to make an elegant headband.
Save money and a shopping trip by making a crafty headband with velvet ribbon. The no-sew headbands are simple enough to make that kids of all ages can create their own. Handmade velvet headbands make ideal presents for the fashionistas on your holiday gift-giving list, as well as thoughtful bridal shower favors. Kids can also make the hair accessories during birthday and slumber parties. Supply a variety of ribbon colors and allow each girl to choose her favorite hue for a customized look.
Instructions
1. Use a tape measure to measure around the wearer's head. Deduct 1 1/2 or 2 inches from the length and cut a 1-inch-wide colorful velvet ribbon to size.
2. Cut a 2 1/2-inch piece of 1-inch wide elastic. Choose a color of elastic, such as black or white, that best matches the ribbon color.
3. Place strips of hot glue on each end of the elastic. Press the ribbon ends onto the glue to form a stretchable headband; you can slip the hairpiece on and off over your head.
4. Cut two 2-inch pieces of matching velvet ribbon. Place glue on one side of each ribbon, and wrap the ribbons around the portions of the band where the elastic connects to the ribbon.
5. Embellish the ribbon headband with small decor items, such as flat-backed gems, beads or buttons if you desire. Use a hot glue gun to attach the embellishments across the top of the headband.
